Korea and Japan hosted World Cup Soccer 2002 together.

We compare Korea and Japan in how people enjoyed the games and how excited they were in both countries.

We made a questionnaire and asked students at our school and some other school to answer questions.

Please look at this chart.

Our question is gDo you know when World Cup Soccer 2002 will be held?h

This is the answers to the question.

100 of Korean students and 56 of Japanese students answer gYes.h

This shows Korean people have more interest in World Cup Soccer 2002 than Japanese people.

Why?

We researched on the difference of peoplefs reaction to World Cup Soccer in Korea and Japan.

A Korean burned himself to death to wish for Korean victory in World Cup.

All the TV stations in Korea broadcasted World Cup programs all day and still they have many programs featuring World Cup.

A major cellular phone company in Korea taught how to cheer for Korea team in the commercial.

People could down load a song to cheer for their national team through the Internet.

All the stadiums in Korea looked all red with a lot of supporters wearing red T-shirts.

We called them ered devilf.

After 2002 FIFA World Cup, people in Korea still keep their good memories in their minds and downtowns still look red.

In this way, Korean people got much more excited at the games than we had expected.

How about in Japan?

In Osaka many people dived into Dotonbori River after Japanese games.

They wanted to express their great joy.

Some students didnft go to school to watch the game when Japanese team had a game.

Some young Japanese copied David Beckhamfs hairstyle.

Some people love to wear official uniforms of Japanese team.

And now, after FIFA World Cup Soccer 2002 more people enjoy playing soccer

in Japan.

Companies also enjoyed World Cup and tried hard to take advantage of it.

We asked some companies to offer their promotion goods or their products featuring World Cup to us.

For example, a confectionery maker sold sweets with dolls wearing an official uniform of Japanese national team.

Asahi Shinbun, one of major newspapers in Japan, issued special editions everyday during World Cup Soccer 2002.

A famous instant noodle maker featured a world-famous soccer player in their commercial.

We display all the things we collected in the lobby.

Please have a look at them. But donft take them away.

In this way Japanese people were very excited about World Cup Soccer, too.

But we found the difference of peoplefs support for World Cup between Korea and Japan.

It seems to us people were united to support World Cup and people tried to support it by themselves in Korea.

In Japan companies and mass media tried much harder to support World Cup than individual people. And with their encouragement people got interested in the event gradually.

Next, please look at this chart.

Our question isgWhat do you think of World Cup being held in your country?h

This is the answers.

Both Korean and Japanese students think it very nice to have World Cup Soccer games in their own countries.

But please look at this result.

This is the answers to a question,gWhat do you think of Korea and Japan hosting World Cup Soccer together?h

Many Japanese think that it is very good.

On the other hand, Korean people donft think so.

One of the reasons why Japanese people think it nice was they expected they would have a better relationships with Korea after the event.

But Korean people donft think so. Why?

According to our Korean teacher and our questionnaire, Korean people wanted to have 2002 FIFA World Cup only in their country.

Why?

After World Cup Soccer 2002 ended, our teacher said that World Cup soccer 2002 gave a good chance for Korea and Japan to be good friends.

In fact, what do Korean people think of this?

Wefve come to one conclusion after our research. ItfsgFIFA World Cup Soccer 2002 united people in many ways.h

In our daily life we have few chances to have a sense of unity.

We donft always have much time to talk with our family.

We donft always have so many friends to share our feelings with each other.

But during World Cup we could share our feelings and time with many people, like our family, friends and even strangers, even if we hadnft talked with so much or had never met before.

Some day in the near future we will be able to share this sense of unity with Korean people. We believe it.

And it would be as wonderful as a victory at World Cup Soccer.

This is all for our presentation.

Thank you very much for your kind attention.
